I have been bombarded with Facebook messages and ladies coming up to me at events, insisting I share my baby weight loss secret. "You look amazing," "How did you do it?" they ask. Honestly, there’s no secret….just dedication to oneself to be the healthiest you can be. The surprising thing is I've only lost about 2 lbs from my full term pregnancy weight. Probably not the reality you wanted to hear. What you're seeing is a gain in muscle and better weight distribution.
I’ve lived the yoyo fitness life. Exercising consistently for a year or two, then falling off the wagon for sometimes as much as 3 years! Getting back on, and then life takes over- career, husband, too many late nights and special events.
Let’s not talk about my eating rollercoaster. Later on in life I learned that the meals I grew up on weren’t necessarily the healthiest choices. And when I wanted to have a second child, I settled on a vegan lifestyle. So all in all, that baby weight battle started with the prep. A few months before I got pregnant I had reached my weight loss target and was the fittest I had ever been. I'd been doing Crossfit 8 months and ran my first 15K.
Weeks in to my 1st trimester, I was craving meat and some of the other foods not permitted when practicing veganism. And while I did reap many rewards eating vegan meals, I wasn’t fanatical about the lifestyle, so I quickly sort ways to incorporate animal proteins on my plate. What I did find was a lifesaver, because by this time my OB instructed me to stop all exercise, only walk when necessary, as I had a history of an incompetent cervix- this is when a woman’s cervix is weak and she is more likely to have a baby born prematurely because the cervix shortens or opens too early. Certainly this cervical experience deserves its own blog post (coming soon).
The baby only breastfed for 5 months. I was hoping he would feed longer from mother’s bossom, as my first son sucked the fat right off of me lol. I was severely sleep deprived, and it took me until the baby was 2 years old before I consistently began exercising again...but I was for the most part eating healthy all the while...which is what kept me from ballooning.
So we fast forward to now, the baby now toddler will be 3 in November, and I’m satisfied to say I’ve been exercising (mainly crossfit) for a year and 4 months, ran Fusion Lite, a 15K and a few 5Ks. For meals I have been limiting my animal protein and opting for more veggies and grain. And I have moved on from the stage where getting to the gym or going for a run feels like a chore. Now, I am excited to get sweaty and working out is a priority, where meetings and meet ups get scheduled around the gym. And I also have more energy to run after the LO.
So my get your before baby body tip would be…Just Do It For YOU! Once you start with this thinking, you're on your way to a healthier, more confident Momma.
